About Vanessa


Vanessa Griffin is a Southern California native and a 14-year Navy veteran. She is a lifelong learner and community activist, dedicating many hours to the citizens of her county, region, as well as multiple non-profit organizations.


Vanessa a proud Navy veteran, with 14 years of combined active and reserve service.  Her service provided the opportunity to be an active part of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort in 2005, where she ensured official communications for all of the organizations involved, provided food and assistance to families who were affected by the storm, and helped to restore churches and other public facilities. She also assisted in the evacuation of Americans out of Lebanon amid its conflict with Israel while on deployment in 2006.  She held multiple positions during this time that required a high level of responsibility and the decisions from which had a widespread impact on current and future operations. Military Decorations: Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy “E” Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (3), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.


Human Rights Commission (HRC)Commissioner, Fairfax County (2016-Current)
•Appointed as a Commissioner to the Fairfax County HRC representing the Lee District. Receives and investigates discrimination complaints alleging a violation of the Fairfax County Human Rights Ordinance. Cooperates with employees, the housing industry and other businesses in the locality to ensure that equal opportunity and access laws are enforced.
The Trevor Project – Crisis Counselor (2016-Current)
•Serves as a Crisis Counselor for The Trevor Project, which is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.
Central Virginia Justice Initiative (CVJI) – Director of Prevention (2013-2016)
•Volunteered to assist in the establishment and operation of the Central Virginia Television Network, with the mission of providing the communities of Central Virginia programs with purpose, meaning, and excellence through the voice of Public Access Television.
Central Virginia Television Network (CVTV) – Producer (2013-2015)
•Volunteered to assist in the establishment and operation of the Central Virginia Television Network, with the mission of providing the communities of Central Virginia programs with purpose, meaning, and excellence through the voice of Public Access Television.
North Stafford Farmers Market (NS-FM) – CEO/Market Manager (2013-2015)
•Initiated and successfully led the establishment of the North Stafford Farmers Market to promote community health, enhance economic development, and improve local tourism.
Doctor Yum Project Advisory Committee – Advisor (2014-2015)
•Served as an adviser to the Doctor Yum Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to combating childhood obesity through creating a wellness-centered culture for children, families, and the greater community.
Industrial Development Authority – Director (2012-2015)
•Reviewed proposals for municipal bonds and notes issuances to counties and school boards throughout Virginia.
Transportation Advisory Group – Chairman (2011-2015)
•Advised the Policy Committee and Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and functioned as an appointed sounding board for public opinion on transportation issues, promoting ways to improve the quality of the region’s transportation system for Spotsylvania County, Stafford County, and the city of Fredericksburg.
School Board Advisory Committee for Technology – Vice Chair (2011- 2013)
•Advised the Stafford County School Board and superintendent on technological matters of concern/interest that affected the education and quality of life for approximately 26,928 students, across 30 public schools.
Architectural Review Board – Secretary (2011- 2013)
•Reviewed applications for new construction, renovation, or alteration of buildings located within Historic Overlay Districts. Advised and implemented policy changes that improved the overall structure and functionality of the committee.
Stafford County 350th Anniversary Committee – Member (2012-2013)
•Volunteered to assist with Stafford County’s 350th anniversary celebration to enhance economic growth, honor the area’s rich history, and build a stronger sense of community within the locality.
